The return waits on closed months.
A return prepared from an open year is a story somebody has to invent. We do not do that. Each month that goes into the workpapers already has a close date and a recap. An older month left open holds the stack, and the hold is visible so you are not surprised in March.
Wages in this state are not taxed again on a personal return, so the year is decided on the federal form. That form is only as steady as the months we already closed. The estimate people feel in June should drink from those same months, and a lighter state load is not a lighter year.
When the return is prepared, the numbers that belong back in the file go back in the file. Next January should not open with an argument about a total nobody can find. Draws, wages, and distributions stay distinguishable. If a choice about equipment or a retirement contribution is still open late in the year, we read the closed months while that choice can still change the result.
The franchise report in May is a cousin of this work, not a substitute for it. A year with nothing owed still files. The no-tax-due line on this cycle's report sits at 2,650,000 dollars. Past the no-tax-due receipts, retail and wholesale are computed at 0.375 percent. Other activity uses 0.75 percent. The books have to be readable before anyone picks a side.
If the year is not ready, you will hear that before a return is forced. That is a better use of the spring than a return built on plugs. The return tile on the home page says the same thing in one line. This page is the longer version, including the part where a single open month is allowed to stop the whole year. That open month is named in the reply before any year form is started.
